Highly Rural Veterans Transportation Program

The Highly Rural Transportation Grant Program offers medical transportation for veterans that reside in 15 highly rural counties in New Mexico. This includes the Pueblos Acoma, Alamo, Laguna, Ramah, and parts of Zuni. The HRTG serves 13,500 veterans. Planned expansion of the program will serve the remaining counties and pueblos.

The program provides free round-trip service for veterans to and from their VA or VA-eligble medical appointments. You must allow three days when making the appointment.

HRTG VENDORS

ABQ Express: Based in Bernalillo, serves Cibola, Catron, Sierra, Socorro, Torrance and Hidalgo counties.

Angel’s Touch: based in Las Vegas, serves San Miguel, Guadalupe, De Baca, and Quay counties.

Blue Raven: based in Socorro, serves Socorro and Native Lands (Acoma, Alamo, Laguna, Ramah, and Zuni Pueblos).

Golden Spread: based in Clayton. Serves Union, Colfax, Mora, Harding and counties. ravels to southern Colorado and Amarillo, Texas.

Shuttle Ruidoso: based in Ruidoso, serves Lincoln and Sierra counties. Travels to El Paso, Texas.

DAV operates a fleet of vehicles around the country to provide free transportation to VA medical facilities for injured and ill veterans. DAV stepped in to help veterans get the care they need when the federal government terminated its program that helped many of them pay for transportation to and from medical facilities. The vans are driven by volunteers, and the rides coordinated by more than 149 Hospital Service Coordinators around the country.

DAV provides rides to VA and non-VA medical appointments. DAV covers Alamogordo, Espanola, Santa Fe, Farmington, Gallup, Las Cruces, Raton, Las Vegas, and Truth or Consequences.

There are 11 serviceable vans and 70–75 volunteer drivers.

Taos Neighbors and Elders Together (TENT)

A community of elders and neighbors supporting one another. (Elders 60+ and disabled adults. We provide transportation to non-emergency medical appointments in Rio Arriba ad Taos Counties.

Veterans Transportation Service  (VTS)

Six drivers and six vehicles authorized for use;

  • All vehicles have wheelchair capaility
  • 2 wheelchairs / 6 passengers
  • Hors of operation: Monday through Friday 0600–1730 (excluding holidays)
  • Must call 3 business days in advance
  • Supports Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Edgewood, Belen
  • Unscheduled pickups allowed
  • Scheduled appointments: unable to take veterans jhome after appointment
  • Remote locations and winter months may affect availability of drivers.

If you live in the Southeast region of New Mexico, Veteran organization SNMVTN provides rides for Veterans to and from medical appointments in Roswell and surrounding areas. Southeast NM Veterans Transportation Network hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (MT) Monday-Thursday.

Sun Van Paratransit Service

Sun Van, ABQ RIDE’s paratransit service, provides accessible transportation to persons residing in or visiting the metro area whose impairment makes it impossible to ride the fixed route service.
